As I'm sure most of you are aware, there has been many changes to our current day curriculum including the Common Core Standards for both ELA and Math. The same is also going to be true of the Science curriculum within the next few years. If any of you are interested in becoming familiar with these to see what your child will be learning in Science in the years to come please feel free to visit the Next Generation Science Standards website. As of November 2015 our state adopted the new Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). For the next few years we - along with ALL other public schools across the state of Michigan - are going to be in a transitional period as we begin to shift practices, content, and curriculum to meet the new requirements.
These new standards are much more rigorous than our current State GLCEs, but don't worry we will make this a gradual progression and transition to the new curriculum and processes over a three year period. This is the same roll-out that is being done across the county and state.
The nice thing about these new standards is that they are VERY similar to our already in place Montessori philosophies! Students are to use more inquiry based methods to discover ideas about new concepts, they will use more hands on approaches, engage in more discussions about scientific concepts, and integrate more technology and engineering into the science world. It should be a very fun and exciting learning experience!
